China generates less than half electricity from coal in historic first
China generated less than 50 percent of its electricity from coal in the first half of 2025, a historic first for the world's largest coal consumer. Coal's share fell to 49.7 percent while renewable energy surged to 41.2 percent, with wind and solar accounting for 24.6 percent.
